ROBOT WATSON! That is all. Join Tabz, Angela, John and Scott as they discuss Sherlock Holmes in the 22nd Century and Jeremy Brett’s The Crooked Man.

The Adaptations #003 – The Musgrave Ritual (Jeremy Brett & Basil Rathbone)

The Musgrave Ritual (Jeremy Brett)

Join Tabz, John, Scott and Angela as they discuss two adaptions of “The Musgrave Ritual,” one with Jeremy Brett and the 1943 Sherlock Holmes Faces Death with Basil Rathbone. Both adaptations take liberties with the original source material and we discuss the differences and our enjoyment of them. This is John’s first view of a Basil Rathbone film!

Tabz mentions a NY Times Review. You can read it here.

Study in Scarlet – The Adaptations

A Study in Scarlet (with Peter Cushing as Sherlock Holmes)

A Study in Scarlet (with Peter Cushing as Sherlock Holmes)

A Study in Scarlet hasn’t been adapted very often for film or TV (though the story of Sherlock Holmes’ and Watson’s first meeting has been incorporated into a lot of stories). Among the first Sherlock Holmes movies was “A Study in Scarlet”, authorized by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle into a silent film in 1914. Unfortunately, the film doesn’t exist any longer.

In 1933, a film named “A Study in Scarlet” was made, but the filmmakers only had the rights to the title and so the plot is completely different (you can watch the film for free on Amazon with Amazon Prime or here on Archive.org or here on YouTube).

Other adaptations include:

  • the BBC Sherlock Holmes series with Peter Cushing (1968) [you can find this on YouTube].
  • 1983 animated version produced by Burbank Films Australia, with Peter O’Toole voicing Sherlock Holmes [also on YouTube].
  • BBC Sherlock with Benedict Cumberbatch used elements of this story in “A Study in Pink.”

We will be discussing the adaptations hopefully in a future episode, so if you’d like to watch along with us feel free! Newbies may want to avoid the BBC Sherlock with Benedict as it has spoilers for the whole series.
